House of Cards is set in Washington, D.C. and is the story of Congressman, Frank Underwood, a Democrat from South Carolina, who works with his equally conniving wife, Claire, achieving their goals about obtaining political power and to exact revenge on the people who betrayed them. The series deals with themes of ruthless pragmatism, manipulation, murder, political decadance, betrayal and power.
